Abstract:

The Edward W. Strong papers contain documents related to his career at U.C. Berkeley, particularly his time as Chancellor from 1961-1965. Edward W. Strong was the third Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, Professor of Philosophy and Sociology, past President of the American Philosophical Association and founder of the Journal of the History of Philosophy. Among other positions held during his time at U.C. Berkeley are: Chair of the Department of Sociology. Associate Dean of the College of Letters and Science and Vice Chancellor for Research. Strong succeeded Glenn Seaborg as Chancellor in 1961. The end of his tenure in the latter position was precipitated by the burgeoning Free Speech Movement on campus. Strong resigned as Chancellor in March 1965. He later returned to teaching at the university after being appointed Mills Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy and Civil Polilty, taking on emeritus status in 1967. Strong died of cancer in January 1990.
